2015 City Slickers Camp
Each year, our service unit (639) puts on a summer camp called City Slickers. It lasts a week for Cadettes, Seniors, & Ambassadors and a half-week for Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors. Our theme this year is “It’s a Girl Thing!” I’m one of the Juniors’ leaders. The Brownies and Daisies are day-only, but the Juniors spend each night. I’m really looking forward to it, and I’ve been planning events for it for the past few months. After City Slickers is over, it’s troop planning time! W00t!
Before I talk about the camp, I have to say that our service unit is very lucky to have some very special ladies who contribute a lot of their time. Some of them were troop leaders for many, many years but still volunteer for the service unit even though their girls have graduated or are about to graduate. They are such an asset to those of us who are still leaders, and I don’t know how we could do the things we do without them.
Enough mushy stuff!
We’ve got a lot of stuff planned and will earn badges and patches that girls normally wouldn’t earn with their troop. If you’re curious, we’re earning:
- The Swamp Rabbit Trail patch
- Earth Connections (retired Junior badge)
- Outdoors in the City (retired Junior badge)
- Garden Clubs of South Carolina patch
- Plus lots of other patches & activities (painting, Zumba, duct tape crafts, spa night, roller skating, etc)
One night I’m going to show the Hallmark movie Smart Cookies. It came out a few years ago, and while it’s no Citizen Kane, it is a cute movie and gets you a little pumped up in the end about Girl Scouts. Maybe even a tear if you’re of the sentimental type. It’s safe for all ages, so there are no worries about language or adult situations. I mean, it’s about Girl Scouts! What did you expect? 😉
I’m starting to get those butterflies in the stomach the closer we get. Although I love planning stuff, I’m not so good with time management and implementation and tend to stress too much over it. I also tend to blame myself if something goes wrong even though it may be something I have no control over. Lighten up, Amy! Enjoy the ride I say to myself! But no ghost stories!
So why is it called City Slickers? I have no idea. I always think of the Billy Crystal and Jack Palance movie of the same name from 1991. Can I yell out CITY SLICKERS HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! when we’re moving out? YEEHAW! I hope I don’t lose my watch while helping a cow give birth.
I leave you with this (edited for language):
