Moonshine Falls at Asbury Hills
And then we get to the second rock pile. At this point I’m going to throw Meggan completely under the bus. LOL, sorry Meggan! She was in charge of the map, and the red blaze trail splits in two for some weird reason. Moonshine Falls is on the right. And we went to the left. To Meggan’s defense though, I was probably rambling on and on about some Girl Scout something or other as Donkey drones on and on to Shrek.
Well, this should have been our first hint.
But we read into it way too much and came upon some other hikers, so we figured we were on the right path. After a few stream crossings, we kept saying to each other, “Shouldn’t we have come across it by now?”
Then we get to this waterfall:
Both of us: “THIS is Moonshine Falls??? We came all this way to see THIS?”
We started discussing this turn of events because surely this is not THE waterfall. There are no barrels around it. We even tried calling Joel, our minister who recommended this hike. We couldn’t get him on the phone, so we called our associate minister to ask her to look up Moonshine Falls. She described something completely different. So I asked Meggan if I could see the map, and there’s a gray dashed line that lines up almost right up against the contour lines. WE’RE ON THE WRONG TRAIL! We had probably gone a mile at this point.
BTW, this actually is a real trail that used to be part of Asbury Hills, but now it’s on private property. It circles back around and takes you back to the camp. But dangit, we’re here to see Moonshine Falls!
But before turning around, we named the small waterfall Little Lost Methodist Falls.
We backtracked and came upon the now obvious path down to Moonshine Falls. WE’RE HERE!
Here are some pictures of Moonshine Falls underneath the waterfall (with gin barrels, of course!):
I made some videos as well:
Soon after this hike, Meggan moved to Missouri. Miss you, Meggan!
I thought we named it LOST METHODIST FALLS!! Because we were LOST! 😉
And in my defense, I am a horrible map reader…just ask my husband. And now you know for future hikes. How did I get that job anyway??
That’s right! We did! Change made. Come back to SC – we’ll go on another hike and I’ll hold the map next time!
