The Path to the Gold Award in the 80s
Back when Troop 20 was made up of wee little Brownies and Juniors, Mrs. Vickers said she would take us to Europe if we stayed in Scouts and earned our Gold Award. Well, not PAY for it, but plan and arrange it and all that stuff. And this was a big deal for Mrs. Vickers, because she was deathly afraid of flying. She did get on a plane to go to Our Cabaña before that trip, but flying overseas was a much bigger deal for her.
At the end of our Junior year in 1985, she passed out this “The Path to the Gold Award” map that she drew for us to see what was ahead. So getting your Gold Award isn’t just about the project itself, but the journey there. (That sounded really cheesy, but it’s true.) Click on the picture to see a larger version.
This post is dedicated to (ALL HAIL) Samona. 😉
My troop was earning ours on almost the exact same schedule!
And, btw, that is how our leaders got us to stay in through middle school and high school: the promise of a big trip!
It worked again last year with my daughter’s troop!
Maybe big trips should be a standard part of all older girl scouting??!!!
One of my Juniors mentioned that she’d like to go to Yellowstone, so I asked the troop if they would like to work toward that at a higher level. They all said yes, so I said if they stuck with me through Cadettes that I would help them plan a trip to Yellowstone. They cheered, so perhaps they’ll remember our deal!
