The New “It’s How Much?” OFFICIAL Scarf – Or Is It?

National Operations, Random Things That Don't Fit Anywhere Else Kinda Like Me    5 Comments    , , ,

This afternoon, my phone started blowing up.  Forwarded emails began piling up in my inbox.  What was going on?

THE RELEASE OF A NEW OFFICIAL SCARF!

I gasped when I saw the headline of the email sent to Lifetime Members: “Exclusive Preview of Limited-Edition Girl Scout Scarf Designed by Diane von Furstenberg.”  I had no idea who Diane Von Furstenberg was, but she sounded important!

The email went on:

Girl Scouts has a history of collaborating with fashion designers. In 1968, our first adult uniform was designed by Stella Sloat, one of Jackie Kennedy’s favorite designers, and ten years later, Halston designed Girl Scouts’ mix-and-match uniform separates in sage green. This year, GSUSA is honored to collaborate with Diane von Furstenberg, fashion designer and philanthropist, on a limited-edition scarf and wristlet that brings Diane’s bold and creative approach to color and prints to Girl Scouts’ iconic trefoil.

As a lifetime member, you have the opportunity to be among the first to purchase the limited-edition Girl Scout scarf* ($150) and wristlet ($45). These items are available to all starting March 3—but we’re offering you the chance to purchase them early. And good news: you can apply your 10% lifetime member discount to your purchase, use promotion code GSLTM!

I said aloud, “A HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS!?!?!?”

Just then, my phone rang.  It was my co-leader.

Me:  Hello?
Cheryl:  Guess what!
Me:  THERE’S A NEW OFFICIAL SCARF AND IT’S $150!!!!
Her:  What?  No, there might not be enough cookies for our order at the pick up tomorrow!
Me:  Oh.

In my world, OFFICIAL Scarves > Cookies.

So I’m thinking, $150????  This beats out the 100th Anniversary Silk and Silk Oblong OFFICIAL scarves by $50!  Holy cow!

But wait!  It’s never referred to as OFFICIAL.  It’s just “Girl Scout Scarf,” and there’s a mystery asterisk next to it with no referencing text anywhere in the email.  So is it really OFFICIAL?  At $150, I think it can be whatever it wants to be.  It’s bought its way into the OFFICIAL SCARF SHOWCASE.

I wonder if the people who wear the $150 OFFICIAL scarf ask each other if they have any Grey Poupon.

Side note:  Ann Robertson has already pointed out the mistake in the email claiming there was no adult uniform until 1968.

Personally, I don’t even think it’s attractive or Girl Sount-y. I know we want to look up to date, but really…

1973? Well at least it’s not ugly colors. My choice would be either of the scarves in the 2011-A catalog.

Y’all know that price will go down in 6 months. It will still be too expensive, but still, I think they have these items for the higher ups in the Girl Scouts program because there is no regular leader who could afford that. That’s right up there with that ridiculous dress and the $90 skirt you can buy at Macy’s for under $40. Thanks for the fun and funny blog.
